When I go to the home of a distressed Oklahoma City area homeowner I know that I am in for a bumpy ride most of the time. On a few occasions the homeowner had already worked through the decision making process but most of the time they are just begi\inning to grasp the dilemma. In no way is this an easy decsion. Home ownership is at the cornerstone of the American dream. To lose this all important sign of success is a strong blow to one's sense of self worth. Too often the homeowners freeze the moment in time and cannot accept that maybe it is not all there fault, and that releasing them from the home can be a freeing experience.
We mail people weekly who are behind in their mortgages. Rarely do we get an immediate response because usually these folks are still looking for solutions and that is a good thing. But when you have the loss of a job when jobs are scarce, or have serious medical problems that have affected your ability to work or even function, then that solution will not be there and you can dig yourself a deeper hole. Many times the decision comes too late to save the home, and the foreclosure has a serious impact on your future and even a car loan may be out of the question.
The worst thing that can happen that may cause you to self destruct and not avoid foreclosure is when the home represents your real value. IT DOES NOT. What represents your true value is the firends and family that surrounds you. They know that a home does not make you a good person or a bad person. They know that failure is just another way of saying something went wrong. They will love and respect you regardless of whether you do a short sale and rent instead of own, and that is where your focus should be. One valuable step you can make on the road to saolving your financial problems is to separate yourself from the house. Afterall, you and your family are made of flesh and blood. A house is just bricks and mortar and it can be replaced. And with a short sale is will be replaced with a better buy ina matter of as little as two years.
